MSI Confirms Cyber Attack, Urges Users to Update Firmware/BIOS

Taiwanese PC company MSI (short for Micro-Star International) falls victim to a cyber attack, confirming that network anomalies were detected and that law enforcement agencies were alerted. The company says that their systems have gradually resumed normal operations, with no significant impact on financial business. MSI is urging users to obtain firmware/BIOS updates only from its official website, and refrain from downloading files from other sources. This is in response to a new ransomware gang known as Money Message, who added the company to its list of victims. Money Message was spotlighted by Zscaler late last month and is known to utilize a double extortion technique that involves exfiltrating the victim's data before encrypting it. The group uploads the data on their leak site if the ransom is unpaid. This is a developing story, and we will update this blog post as more information becomes available.
